Whether you’ve been writing or organizing for a year or a day, you have valuable experiences and contributions, and our community thrives when everyone adds their voice.

How to write an awesome blog post 101

Step 1:

  • Start writing! Often the biggest obstacle to writing a post is the first sentence. You can always go back and edit later, but once you take the first step, the rest will come more easily.

  • If you can’t seem to figure out your first sentence, start in the middle. Once the words start to flow, you can go back to the beginning and figure out that “perfect” first sentence.

Step 2:

  • Make it personal. One of the best things about being a part of the WeArePowerShift community is that we’re all in this fight together. We want to hear about YOU and how what’s going on in the world impacts you and your community.

  • Write how you talk. Don’t worry about how other people write. This is YOUR story, and it’s best told from your point of view, and in your voice.

How to make your (already) awesome post even better

Titles and Headlines:

  • Headlines are important. A good title will give draw the reader in. Clever titles are always appreciated, but make sure they also give a sense of what the post will be about.

  • Give titles to individual sections of your post. Especially if you have a lengthy story to tell, breaking the post into sections with individual titles will help the reader follow along with you.

Make Your Content Stand Out:

  • Provide links to other news stories or stories of interest within your post. This will provide your reader with the ability to easily keep learning about the topic once you have captured their interest.

  • Format for the web: Use short paragraphs and utilize bold and italics to highlight anything that you want to make sure the reader doesn’t miss. Readers skim a lot online. Using bold, italics, and short paragraphs for emphasis helps readers skim faster while still reading the most important pieces of your article.

Images and video:

  • Upload photos and video! Always! Think of how much information a good picture can convey. (There’s a reason that old adage sticks around - a picture is worth a thousand words.)

  • Don’t be afraid to post more than one photograph; a picture can be a really powerful statement.

General tips:

  • Keep a journal of post ideas, for those times that you have a great idea but no time to write. Then, when you have time to sit down and put your thoughts on paper, it will be easier to remember exactly what you wanted to say!

  • Even if you feel like you’re not quite ready to put up a post of your own, you can get involved with the community and get a feel for the style of other people’s writing by reading posts from other people and commenting when you’re done - join the conversation!
