This speech was delivered January 31st at an event hosted by the SUNY ESF and Syracuse University Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign.
I want to start by talking about Oren Lyons. He is a Faithkeeper of the Onondaga Nation, the people who once governed and took care of the land we currently occupy. He was born and raised in the Haudenosaunee culture and theory of governance, which includes the principle of Seven Generation Sustainability, a principle our climate desperately needs. Chief Lyons describes how Seven Generation Sustainability is fundamental to Haudenosaunee decision making: "Every decision that we make relates to the welfare and well-being of the seventh generation to come. What about the seventh generation? Where are you taking them? What will they have?"
