Power Shift 2016

Are you passionate about building a powerful, inclusive, youth-led climate justice movement from the ground up? The Power Shift Network is now seeking applicants for our volunteer Board of Directors. Help lead our organization and build our network!

Board of Directors Volunteer Role Description

The Board of Directors works to uphold and support the mission of the Power Shift Network (PSN): to mobilize the collective power of young people to mitigate climate change and create a just, clean energy future and resilient, thriving communities for all.

The Board of Directors provides strategic direction, guidance and support to the partners and staff of PSN. This is done through internal board projects, organization-wide committees, ad-hoc committees, and working closely with staff and partners. PSN Directors serve as volunteers and do not receive a salary or stipend for their service. The Board aspires to reflect the diversity of our movement and generation and prioritizes organization equity and inclusion. People of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, particularly those from marginalized groups and identities underrepresented in the climate movement.

Since  2014, PSN operates as a  501-(c)3 and as such the Board holds authority under DC and IRS legal guidelines as reflected in our bylaws. The Board receives recommendations by PSN member organizations.

We ask that all those interested in applying to be on the Board complete this application (priority deadline by Friday, January 11th and rolling afterwards). If you have any questions about the application, process, or role of the Board, please email Lauren at

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours a month does the board take?

This varies with the workload based on the time of year, projects we’re undertaking and your specific role in the board. Typical workload is 3-5 hours a month, but may be more depending on role and projects.

How often does the board meet?

We meet once a month via conference call and try to meet in person at least once a year (in-person meetings are subsidized by the PSN operating budget).

Does membership on the board require a financial donation?

Yes, we require all board members to participate in fundraising, whether through donor cultivation or making a personal contribution.

How long is the board term?

It is a 3-year term.

I volunteer with another organization that is affiliated with PSN, am I still allowed to apply?

Yes! As long as you are not paid or contractually obligated to PSN directly, there should be no conflict of interest.

Do I need experience with the Network to apply?

No; in fact we are looking forward to expanding our scope and network so we encourage people to apply who come from a variety of backgrounds (social justice/community-based organizing, environmental justice, clean tech, economic democracy etc are all areas we’re particularly interested in welcoming).
